The programme has been developed for those who are intending to follow a career in mechanical aerospace engineering and wish to follow an alternative route to that of A Levels and sixth form. Although the programme is vocationally orientated towards engineering, it will not prevent anyone from selecting other career routes at a later stage. This vocational background also allows entry into the workplace in the mechanical industry, from design and project engineering jobs through to engineering management.
The programme consists of associated subjects, or units, all of the same duration. A total of 9 BTEC units are studied during this year. This will be sufficient complete the year and leave with a Subsidiary Diploma OR enroll on a 2nd year to complete a further 8 units to make the qualification up to a full Extended Diploma. During the course, a range of subjects are covered that introduce many aspects of mechanical technology. These are complemented with other subjects to provide a sound basis for the needs of a mechanical aerospace engineer.
Successful completion of all elements of the Air & Defence course and meeting the current recruitment criteria of the RAF will facilitate fast-tracking into the Royal Air Force.
