Systems include security and emergency systems to detect intrusion, provide surveillance, monitor and control access to buildings, properties and sites. Skills include interconnection of equipment, programming, verifying performance/fault finding and testing and maintaining. Technicians will carry out planned jobs to install new systems, modify and maintain existing systems as well as respond to call-outs to repair faulty systems where they will utilise their problem solving skills. They will take a professional approach to customer service skills which include being presentable, tidy and respectful as they can often find themselves working in and outside customers' homes as well as in and outside business premises. It is important for Security Systems Technicians to be able to work independently or as part of a team and use their knowledge and skills to ensure systems have bee appropriately selected, installed and maintaned to professional industry standards, often without any supervision, and done so in a safe, efficient and economical manner to minimise waste.
You will need GCSE’s including English and Maths (minimum Grade C). Apprentices without level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to completion of their apprenticeship. You must also be employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week.
Apprentices will be assessed against the core and one of four distinct options, chosen by the apprentice and employer jointly: Fire, Security, Fire & Emergency Lighting or Fire & Security. (Lincoln College currently provides the Security pathway only). On-programme training is currently under development but will be focus on the following themes: Technical knowledge as required in the industry via online tests and workplace observation. Units will be assessed through portfolio building, mini projects that align to professional body requirements. Progress observation on-site throughout the training period. There are 2 on-programme pre-requistite that allow candidates to progress to the end point assessment gateway: Completion of the ECS Health & Safety Assessment test for the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) card, as well as the recommended combined knowledge and workplace units of achievement.
