It is suitable for learners who are working in roles that support pupils’ learning including teaching assistants, learning support assistants and special needs assistants. This qualification is also suitable for volunteers who are beginning a career working with children in schools.
You must be aged 16 or over, not be in fulltime education or training and have been resident in the UK/EEA for at least three years. However, candidates must have good verbal communication skills and be confident in supporting maths, English and ICT; GCSE Grades A-D or equivalent is recommended. They also need to have the opportunity to gain evidence within the work place to complete the qualification. This qualification is best suited to those who are supporting pupils in Key Stage 1-4 - minimum placement requirements are 12 hours a week. Candidates require a minimum of least six weeks within their placement prior to beginning the course, ideally one term of experience within a school environment prior to beginning the course
A variety of assessment methods are used, including direct observation; asking questions; examination of work products; witness testimonies; recognition of prior learning/experience; reflective accounts; simulation; professional discussion; assignments or written tests
