The HNC in Business is a nationally recognised business qualification which provides students with a thorough grounding in a broad range of subjects which are relevant to the modern business environment, and if required, access to a range of university degree conversion programmes in related subjects. Students are required to study 8 units to be awarded the HNC.

This course equips students with the knowledge, understanding and skills essential for successful performance in working life.

Study Details

You will study on the Lincoln College Campus for the full durations of the course.

HNC - 2 years - 1 day per week

Course contact hours are typically comprised of:

4 hrs Theory sessions per week
1 hrs Tutorial per week

It is expected that part-time students complete between 3 and 6 hrs of additional independent study per week in order to be successful on this programme.

Whilst the sessions are delivered at College 1 day per week (or 1 afternoon and evening for part-time students) , it is expected that students will complete the online study, in addition to the independent study, outside of these times. Students should also make themselves available to complete work experience hours outside of these times. Many of the opportunities offered through the college will require commitment during evenings and weekends.
A minimum of 56 UCAS Tariff points from the following:

• GCE A and AS Levels with at least one subject at A Level.
• BTEC National (Diploma or Extended Diploma) in a relevant subject
• Access to HE
• Scottish Higher/Advanced Higher with at least one subject at Advanced Higher.

For mature applicants some experience may be taken in lieu of A Levels / BTECs.

GCSE English – grade C/4 or above
GCSE Maths – grade C/4 or above
(Level 2 Functional skills is not taken as an equivalent)

International applicants
• NARIC confirmed equivalent of 56 UCAS points
• IELTS with an overall score of 6.0 and a minimum of 5.5 in each component. Equivalent English language qualifications are acceptable for applicants not requiring a Tier 4 visa
Assessment Methods

There are typically 2-3 assessment tasks per module delivered. The assessment methods used throughout the programme include:

Coursework portfolios
Written assessments
Presentations (group and individual)
Work experience placement
The programme specification details the assessment strategy for each module, including the relevant task weighting.


HNC qualifications are widely recognised in their own right and provide students with the skills required for employment in a range of associated professions. Students could also progress onto the second year of the BA (hons) Business and Management once they have completed the HNC.
Student Part Time (per academic year)

Home and EU Students £3300.00

Tuition fees will remain unchanged for the duration of a student’s continuous enrolment.

Additional compulsory course costs will be paid for using the Career Degree Bursary. The scheme allows students to access the remainder of the bursary (up to a maximum value of £500 / £250) for additional optional courses, workshops, professional memberships and resources. There is no cash alternative. Students who wish to access opportunities in excess of the Career Degree Bursary may do so at full cost to themselves. Details of payment dates will be provided prior to the course induction.

This course is validated by Pearson. The validating institution is responsible for awarding the qualification at the end of the programme. Students on validated courses are HEFCE registered, funded and taught at Lincoln College and it is the responsibility of the College to manage all aspects of this provision. The validating institution maintains an oversight of the programme throughout the academic year and must be satisfied that students are being taught in line with the required academic standards of the awarding institution.
