The HNC is an eight unit qualification which involves studying three mandatory core subjects and a further five specialist subjects. Study DetailsYou will study on the Lincoln College Campus for the full duration of the course using our dedicated teaching areas.
1 year - 2 days per week
Course contact hours are typically comprised of:
12-14 hrs Theory and Practical sessions per week (F/T);
It is expected that students complete between 4 and 8 hrs of additional independent study per week in order to be successful on this programme.
Whilst the sessions delivered at College will fall between Monday and Tuesday from 9am – 7pm, it is expected that students make themselves available to complete part-time sector specific work or work experience hours outside of these times. Many of the opportunities offered through the college will require commitment during evenings and weekends.
GCE A and AS Levels in relevant subjects, with at least one subject at A Level.
BTEC National (Diploma or Extended Diploma) in a relevant subject
Access to HE
Scottish Higher/Advanced Higher with at least one subject at Advanced Higher.
For mature applicants some experience may be taken in lieu of A Levels / BTECs.
GCSE English – grade C or above
GCSE Maths – grade C or above
(Level 2 Functional skills is not taken as an equivalent)
EU and International applicants
NARIC confirmed equivalent of 48 UCAS points
IELTS with an overall score of 6.0 and a minimum of 5.5 in each component. Equivalent English language qualifications are acceptable for applicants not requiring a Tier 4 visa
The HNC is a qualification which is widely recognised in its own right and provides students with the skills required for employment in a range of associated professions. On successful completion of the course students can continue at the college and study the HND in either Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (subject to sufficient numbers). Students can choose to top up to degree level at another higher institution. The point of entry will depend on the chosen institution and the subjects studied and the grades achieved at HNC/D.

Additional Course Costs Scientific calculator - £10 (compulsory).
Additional compulsory course costs will be paid for using the Lincoln College Bursary / Vocational Credit scheme. The scheme allows students to access the remainder of the Vocational Credit (up to a maximum value of £500 / £250) for additional optional courses, workshops, professional memberships and resources. There is no cash alternative. Students who wish to access opportunities in excess of the Vocational Credit may do so at full cost to themselves.
