If you want to pursue a career involving horses, then this is an excellent place to start. This 'new' Tech Level programme will provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge in horse-related subjects and gives you the experience required to further develop your understanding. Successful completion of this programme contributes towards the BHS Stage 3 in Horse Knowledge, providing knowledge for employment or progression to Higher Education. During this course you will explore both theoretical and practical subjects and you will study the following topics: Equine structure, form and function; Equine diet and nutrition; Managing equine disease; Work experience in the equine sector; Horse tack, equipment and rugs; Equine health and husbandry; Preparation and presentation for competition disciplines; and Managing an equine yard.
You will need 5 GCSEs at Grade C and above or equivalent (E.g. Grade 4 and above in English and Maths). You will be required to attend an interview and taster day on ‘the yard’ and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report) along with evidence of specific and sustained interest and motivation in horses and the horse industry; and an ability to cope with a programme of physical activity.
Assessment is a combination of internally assessed assignments (coursework and practical assessments) and externally assessed tasks and written exams.
