This course will consider programmable logic controllers (PLCs), which aid the automation of industrial processes. The capabilities of PLCs have developed over the years, with performance, reliability and operational resilience being key attributes to their continued success. In order to achieve automated monitoring and control, these devices can be used on their own or in conjunction with others through communication systems/links, which are themselves becoming more versatile.
The course will introduce learners to the use and applications of PLCs, the hardware and software that makes up a PLC and the interaction needed between the component parts. Learners will develop their ability to use programming techniques to produce programs for modern PLCs. They will also gain an understanding of the different types of communication media used to link larger numbers of PLCs together, the networking architecture used and the associated standards and protocols.

Health and Safety relevant to automated processes
Programming techniques for modern industry standard equipment.
Understand complex applications for PLC’s
Understand data communications via networks for modern controllers.
Whilst there are no set entry requirements for this programme, it would be beneficial for you to have an Electrical background.
The course is designed for persons who have an Electrical/Electronic Engineering background who wish to gain knowledge of programmable logic control hardware and software environments.
Lincoln College currently utilises industry standard Allen Bradley PLC Hardware. The training environment allows for Students to physically simulate course relevant processes. Structured PLC programming will be achieved by the college’s fully licenced versions of Rockwells RSlogix software package.
The student will also gain knowledge of PLC hardware configuration, associated input and output devices and their suitability for given tasks.
