This qualification provides an understanding of the hairdressing industry and the skills and knowledge required to progress as a junior stylist for cutting and styling only or continue onto a Level 2 Technical Certificate for colouring and perming.
On completion of this programme, students may progress into employment for cutting and styling hair, go on to an apprenticeship programme or progress on to the level 2 Technical Certificate for colouring and perming.
The programme focuses on units of study which includes: Principles and Practices of Hairdressing ; Styling, Setting and Dressing Hair; Shampooing, Conditioning and Treating the Hair and Scalp; Plaiting and Twisting Hair; Cutting Hair Using Basic Techniques.
You will need GCSE grade D (New GCSE Grade 3) in English Language and one further GCSE at grade D or above and completion of a skills test during the interview process.
Those progressing from Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing may be accepted if they have completed Functional Skills or GCSE, have 90% attendance record and a satisfactory reference from their existing Personal Tutor.
You will be required to have personal hairdressing tools and a specific salon uniform. Details of these are provided during the interview process. The estimated cost of these at present will be approximately £170.00.
You will be continually formatively assessed through practical work on clients and on peers. You will do an end assessment which will be for approximately 4 hours and this will be taken forward for your final grade. In addition to this you will do an end written exam. Both marks will give you the final grade.
