If you want to pursue a career in the animal industry, then this is an excellent place to start. This 'new' Technical Diploma programme will provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge in animal care and gives you the experience required to further develop your understanding. Work experience is an important part of this course as it prepares you for employment within the industry. As part of your course, you will be expected to undertake work experience housed at the centre you are based at – this may include some weekend work. Successful completion of this programme could allow you to progress into further animal-related study or into employment within the sector. During this course you will explore both theoretical and practical subjects and you will study the following topics: Practical Animal Health; Introduction to Animal Biology; Animal Care Work Placement; Animal Welfare; Animal Behaviour Assessment and Safe Handling; and Feeding, Accommodating and Moving Animals.
You will need 4 GCSEs at Grade D and above or equivalent, to include two from: English Language; Mathematics and Science (E.g. Grade 3 and above for Maths and English Language). You will be required to attend an interview and taster day on ‘the yard’ and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report) along with evidence of specific and sustained interest and motivation with animals and the animal industry; and an ability to cope with a programme of physical activity.
Assessment is a combination of coursework and practical assessments.
