Hola! Students celebrate World Hello Day

Students from Newark College celebrated the 45th Annual World Hello Day in a host of different languages.

Celebrated all over the world, the Annual World Hello Day on November 21st has a simple message - to promote world wide peace and to bridge barriers between every nationality.

Mrs Annie Mackenzie, lecturer for English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), spoke about the day.

"It’s a day to bring people together from all over the world, to say ‘hello’ and start a conversation. The idea is that if people talk to each other they will be more tolerant, understanding and respectful of each other leading to a more harmonious society. Hopefully it will encourage relationships between different groups in society to ensure there is a sense of belonging for everyone in all communities."

Displays created by the ESOL and Library teams at Newark College consisted of flags and pictures from many of  the 34 nationalities that attend Newark College.

"Students were asked to write on large cards - ‘Hello, how are you?’ in their language for the displays, and in front there were a selection of sweets, biscuits, cakes and chocolates from various different countries.

"During the four days of the display many students stopped by to have a go at trying to pronounce ‘Hello, how are you ?’ in another language. They were also fascinated by the photographs of exotic places and their conversations were like those you would hear in a travel agents. If the display broadened their taste buds as well as their horizons, then it was a job well done! "

If you're interested in improving your English, from a entry level up to GCSE equivalent, there are still spaces available on the next ESOL course at Newark and at Lincoln.
