Learners cook up a storm in Master Chef final

Two catering students from Lincoln College fought it out to be crowned the winner of the competition.

After making their way through several rounds of the competition held at the College’s Sessions Restaurant, Kathryn Fieldson and Kenny Quayle were pitted against each other in the grand final.

The event was designed to put the Level 1 students’ culinary skills to the test but also help them learn real-life skills such as time management and leadership that will gear them up for employment in their future careers.

Both students produced one main course and one dessert which were then judged by a panel made up of three judges including professional head chef at The Lawn in Lincoln and ex-student of the College Colm Gummoe.

Prizes included an apron for both the winner and runner-up as well as a professional knife set donated by Genware.

After a tense and long deliberation the judges declared Kenny as the winner.

Kenny said: “I’m so happy i’ve won - I feel like i’ve learned a lot during the experience.

“Especially developing my time management skills while working under pressure in a real-life kitchen environment.”

Colm said: “First of all well done to you both because everything tasted amazing.

“All the food was delicious and delivered to such a high standard.”

Managing Director of Education and Training at Lincoln College Mark Locking said: “What we’re trying to do here at the College is be employer-led so our learners are ready for work and that they excel in the workplace - this kind of competition does just that.”
