Let there be light at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue

November 26 2019

Electrical students from Newark College embraced a unique work experience opportunity to complete a lighting installation at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue’s Training Facility.

The bespoke project enabled students to be involved in every stage of the installation process - from design, to pricing up and ordering materials and then finally fitting the electrical source in a previously unused warehouse.

During their time on site the learners put into practice their skills drilling through concrete walls and wooden partitions, securing fixings and wiring. While also battling the elements they worked as a team to find solutions and meet the requirements of their client.

Ian Taylor, Project Manager at the Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Training Facility said: “Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue are keen to work collaboratively with Newark College to offer purposeful work experience within a safe environment.

“We have been really impressed with the students’ attitude and professionalism, from the planning stages to getting the job done within the timescale given. We look forward to working with them again in the future.”

Student Rowan Williams enjoyed being involved with the project. He said: “It gave me the chance to put what I've learned at College into a real world application. It also confirmed that I'm on the right career path and this whole experience will definitely look good on my CV.”

Electrical Engineering Lecturer, David Inger said: “The students stepped out of their comfort zones, worked together and problem solved in a way no classroom can show.

“They now have a great understanding of the industry they are getting into and have proven their ability to follow a clients’ instruction and toe the line in heavily regulated premises.”
