March 31 2020

Zig Zag Underline

Joinery and cabinet making students created bespoke furniture for the Bean Block Café which is due to open its doors this spring.

The coffee house, coming soon to St Marks Place in Newark aims to put families at the heart of the community, serving imaginative food and play. It is therefore no surprise that it is also being set up by the community which it will serve.

Newark College learners were able to demonstrate their specialist skills as they fulfilled a brief set by the Bean Block Café, who wanted multi-purpose storage benches for the function room of the new establishment.

A collection of handcrafted seating units was successfully delivered much to the delight of café owners Cate Martin and Aliki Allen.

They said: “The cabinets by joinery and cabinet making students are exactly to the specifications we gave. Sleek and modern. We are so thrilled with them, particularly with the students’ ability to meet a deadline when up against the threat of college shutting down for Coronavirus.

“There are some immensely talented students in Newark, and they deserve the brightest futures. We hope by adding these elements to their portfolios they can get the university or work placements they so definitely deserve.”

The collaboration with the joinery and cabinet making courses follows several work experience projects that learners from Newark College have been undertaking for the café, as part of an ongoing partnership with the organisation.

Media students captured images to be used as official photography for the Bean Block Café's website and marketing, while artist in training Martyna Wilk designed a statement mural for their walls, inspired by a local landmark.

The College look forward to supporting the new community café further as its venture progresses.
