Students raise awareness of mental health with local charity

Learners from Newark College held a Q&A session with the founder of the Shaw Mind Foundation on World Mental Health Day.

In a bid to break down the stigma surrounding mental health, a group of GCSE English students interviewed Adam Shaw to find out more about his organisation and to normalise conversations around the subject.

Media students were on hand to capture footage as Adam spoke openly about mental health and the help available for those affected by it. He shared success stories about how the work of his charity has helped to make a difference and he highlighted the importance of educating younger people about mental health.

The Shaw Mind Foundation hopes for everyone to have access to mental health resources when they need them and it aims to provide communities with positive mental health and wellbeing support. They also help young people who care for a parent struggling with a mental illness.

Adam Shaw said: “This has been an amazing experience. The students asked valid questions, which allows discussions to take place and enables us to talk about mental health issues openly”.

Learner Dom Smith said: “I was surprised when I started talking as I relaxed and felt able to ask even more questions about mental health.”

Oliver Pennington said: “Adam made me feel at ease and I learnt a lot.”

The talk with Adam Shaw is part of a number of activities planned by the College to support the health and wellbeing of staff and students during Mental Health Awareness Week and beyond.

A number of complimentary sport and fitness sessions are also on the agenda including boxercise classes with the Former Commonwealth and European Champion, Esham Pickering, thanks to funding from Active Leisure Nottingham.

The Shaw Mind Foundation will be returning to Newark College to deliver regular mental health workshops for staff and students throughout the year. They will be using the film produced by the media students following this session to promote their services.

If you’d like to find out more about college life and the support available to students, come along to our open day on Tuesday 15th October from 4-7pm. More info here.
